Blended Language Learning

Progettare ambienti amplificatori per l’acquisizione linguistica
Silvana Fanalista

Blended Language Learning (BLL) is an instructional design approach that intentionally integrates face-to-face and distance components within a coherent learning experience, coordinating activities, time, learning spaces, tools, forms of interaction and assessment practices in relation to learners’ needs, linguistic and communicative objectives, and the characteristics of the educational context.

The book proposes the amplifying environment as a heuristic framework for BLL analysis and design, organised around three interdependent analytical dimensions: cognitive, social and affective. The framework guides the analysis and design of conditions that may broaden, diversify and coordinate opportunities for processing and reprocessing input, language use, interaction, collaboration, reflection and self-regulation. Amplification is treated as a potential outcome of intentional design, not as an automatic effect of technology or of BLL itself.

The theoretical discussion is complemented by a practice-oriented repertoire of communicative language activities covering reception, production, interaction and mediation across different CEFR levels. The book also presents a situated action research study conducted in a Spanish context of Italian as a foreign language, together with a fully developed learning unit, authentic tasks, assessment rubrics and grids. The proposals are conceived as adaptable structures that can be recontextualised for different educational settings. The book also includes examples of pedagogically informed uses of generative artificial intelligence and adaptive learning systems.

Intended for language teachers, teacher educators, researchers and students, the book brings together theoretical reflection, empirical research and instructional design, offering a conceptual framework and practical tools for designing, observing and evaluating BLL courses across different educational contexts.
